Facepalm and Kontrol Freeks FPS

March 3, 2010

The facepalm bit:

^^ that’s all I have to say. Maybe I should start up a Rings of Wedemption fanclub, I seem to get all his search traffic anyway – and I’m not going to be using his name anywhere on this post, or in the tags as I’d really like for the search traffic to be about gaming rather than him and Ben Kurton (see what I did there – sneaky AND clever. Take that search engine terms!).

And the Kontrol Freeks bit:

My fellow blogging pal Donncha has previously posted about them. But now it seems that the Kontrol Freeks FPS band wagon has rolled into town and everyone is on it. Especially as there’s commission to be made. The number of YouTuber’s who have done “reviews” on it over the past weeks has been frankly staggering. Reviews range from “These things are the best thing since thumbs” to “They’re good, they’re not my thing, but a lot of other people are really into them” – but that’s probably because for every unit they help shift they get some coin.
So here’s my review: Logically, the concept is sound. But do you really need to buy them or could you make something similar using easily available household items and achieve the same results? Well, stay tuned for that because I’m going old school, I’m watching Blue Peter and I have an adult handy to do any cutting out for me!

YouTube Three to Watch Week 2 – and Hauppage update

March 3, 2010

Here’s week two of the Three to Watch series – not really sure how long this will run for as I’m trying to show YouTube uploaders who don’t have that many subscribers, or who aren’t really well known yet.

This week we’ve got:

xBrZz who I saw in a dual commentary with……..someone else I’m subscribed to who I can’t find now.

KCsCloud/xJollyLlama who I found via his posts on codnation.net which in turn I found via sasbenjr who has influenced KCsCloud’s gameplay (and mine).

DerekDandy who was another referall from another subscription.

–Hauppage Update

I was checking out the Hauppage site earlier to double check how many pennies I have to find down the back of the sofa when I saw something that I didn’t notice before. Previously I had the price worked out at $220 (roughly £140), but I failed to notice the bit that said

Note: Shipments to Ireland, UK, Belgium and the Netherlands will be shipped from our Ireland warehouse, and will be charged shipping costs plus 21% Irish VAT on goods and shipping.

Which then works out at £176…..so I take back everything I said in this post. I’m taking back the high five I was giving to Hauppage and replace it with a heartfelt BOOOO! Looks like it will be 2036 before I squirrel enough pennies.

Ho-hum. Looks like Play.com is doing it cheapest after all.

Fat PS3 Health Warning

March 1, 2010

I noticed earlier on today that a number of people were posting on YouTube that they could not get on to PSN. I don’t tend to play during the day but tried this evening and sure enough – network error.

It turns out that this is only affecting the older fat PS3s of which mine is one, the curvy beauty that it is. However, what is alarming is this:
Playstation 3 owners should ‘stop gaming’

Apparently:

Sony has told owners of older models of its PlayStation 3 console to stop using the machine because of a problem with the PlayStation Network.

Funny…they haven’t told me! All I get is a network error message when I try to sign in……better check http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/ to find out about this REALLY IMPORTANT issue. Oh….there’s nothing there either- you’d think that something that can potentially harm your PS3 would be on the front page. Perhaps I should remove my tinfoil hat as Sony must be using mind bullets to get the message across….hmmm, nothing is important enough to remove my tinfoil hat, I’ll just not bother with the PS3 until my usual gaming time late late later tonight.

Oh, found it: http://uk.playstation.com/games-media/news/articles/detail/item266689/PlayStation-Network-currently-unavailable/ – awesome!

Hauppage update and sasbenjr giveaway

February 25, 2010

Well, I put my surfboard on eBay today to fund my goal of getting the Hauppage HD PVR that I’ve previously posted about. I’ve got the starting price at £80 which should be reasonable for it, although I don’t think that it will go for much more than that. I’ve got 3 watchers which is encouraging as it’s still got pretty much seven days to go. So here’s where the fund stands now, the red being money in the bank (pennies in the jar) and the green is the minimum potential from the eBay sale:

The Hauppage Fund

The Hauppage Fund

However, when I popped on to YouTube earlier it turns out sasbenjr is giving away an Hauppage HD PVR – woohoo! But only to North American subscribers…..boooo! Nevermind, and the best of luck to Geoff and his channel.
****EDIT/UPDATE: Geoff has let me know that he’s now changed the criteria, so if you are not in the US and are happy to pay shipping and taxes then you can participate. So go along, subscribe, and the best of luck****

Here’s his link and the giveaway video:

And in other news, Donncha’s new surround sound headset is somewhere in transit. I recommend NORAD for tracking – if they can track Santa they can find where your Sharkoons are (hope they arrive for you tomorrow, in time for the weekend!).

You Don’t Need 1337 Skillz When You’ve Got Host

February 25, 2010

Last night I had a fairly decent round of games – no beast scores, in fact I don’t think I hit top spot on any of the maps I played. Although it’s nice to win I prefer to feel like I’ve had a quality game. A couple of times I was host which is always nice and gives you a distinct advantage.

This happens because Modern Warfare 2 like all other combat or fps games operates a first past the post system when it comes to working out who hit who. The basic for working this out is what is called Ping. If you’re familiar with the internet and networking then you can probably skip the next bit. Otherwise, read on.

Ping at its most basic is how quickly one computer responds to another. It’s counted in milliseconds (ms), or thousandths of a second, the lower the number – the better your ping, the better your ping the more likely you are to get your kill in first. There are some things that affect your ping which I’ll come to later, but for now we’ll stick to basic ping.

Now imagine two gun fighters meeting on Main Street at high noon.

Gunfighters doing what gunfighters do.

Mr Greenbar faces down Mr Limebar

You’ve got Mr Greenbar and Mr Limebar – they’re both equally matched, same reaction times, same weapons. When the Town Hall clock strikes Noon they’re going to draw and fire. Noon strikes and a shot rings out – Mr Limebar falls to the ground fatally injured his last words: “Why? How?”. So here’s where the analogy is explained and I show how clever I am (or a smartass if you prefer).

The Town Hall Clock is the server, Mr Greenbar has the best ping, Mr Limebar has decent ping, but less than Greenbar. Because Greenbar has a quicker connection to the server his shots are acknowledged before Limebar. in the analogy when the Town Hall Clock strikes Mr Greenbar hears it slightly sooner than Limebar and fires – even if Limebar fires the instant he hears noon strike, Greenbar’s shots are already on their way to him. That’s ping in a nutshell.

You WILL have experienced this. Probably on more than one occasion in MW2. You turn the corner, see someone coming the other way and unload your clip at them, but you’re dead!? But then the killcam pops up and shows that you didn’t even fire a shot! It even happens to the best of them – I think in one of SeaNanner’s vids he backs up behind a building on Skidrow when another guy unexpectedly comes round the corner, only to get killed – the killcam showing him still in the open!

When I was PC gaming most FPS used a mix of public (hosted games on peoples machines and connections) and dedicated servers (games played on the publishing company’s servers with massive available bandwidth). Going from that to console gaming felt like I was entering the dark ages as you are at the mercy of not only your connection, but the person chosen to host the game’s connection, network set up and their option to rage quit at any moment. This can make getting a decent connection difficult to find – and it’s something over which you have zero control.

So what affects your ping and what can you do about it?

First and foremost your ping is affected by the server you are connected to. Even if you have the best connection in the world your ability to get a decent connection will be affected if the host you are connected to is throttled, choked or is otherwise unable to respond to incoming communication requests. Throttling can be something that happens at the server end, or may be put in place by an ISP if there is excessive traffic to a particular IP address. Choking is when there is too much information for the server to either receive or send – this happens more often to players in the UK due to our ridiculously low upload speeds compared to the download and is directly caused by ISPs oversubscribing network nodes. There’s nothing you can do about that, other than buy a load of your favourite consoles, set up a LAN and invite me round.

Your proximity to the host is an issue – and who you get matched up to depends on what time of day you play. If you go online when the majority of your country is in bed you’ll probably end up playing on a server the other side of the world. Those little 1s and 0s take time to scoot around the intertubes and so you can expect to be at best Mr Yellowbar on those games. If you’re Mr Yellowbar you’re probably better off finding a low traffic area of the map and crack out your claymores and sniper rifle. Unfortunately on console games you do not have the option to specify what countries you are willing to play against, or what maximum ping rate you are willing to accept. When I click on “Find Game” if it’s still searching for a game at 70ms ping then I quit the lobby and try again. If you accept >70ms ping then you might as well just stand in the middle of the map with your pistol. Why deliberately put yourself at a ping disadvantage?

Packet loss…….ugh!
With computers, communication works on an ‘all or nothing’ basis with information broken down into handy chunks called packets. Those packets can go missing or become garbled in transit – if that happens the information has to be resent until it is correctly acknowledged at the other end. Packet loss is the internet equivalent of having a conversation with a hard of hearing and confused elderly relative. You’re saying something as clear as day to you, but they just keep repeating that don’t understand, or they missed the last bit.
When I was doing internet support this was the single major pain in the arse issue that people had. It’s difficult to pin down, but in most cases can only be resolved by major investment in the network infrastructure of your ISP (if it’s not originating from your equipment). But, if it’s not your ISP – even though, chances are, it is – packet loss can be caused by your router/firewall set up, or if someone else is hammering your connection at the same time you are trying to play online. If you suspect packet loss, or have an obscenely high ping for no apparent reason then you need to work out if it is you, or your ISP. This is easily done, disconnect all other equipment from your modem and connect your console directly to it. If your ping still stinks then it’s time to call technical support (good luck with that), if it’s miraculously better then you need to check that your router/firewall has UPnP enabled or your console is allocated to the DMZ (I won’t go into those here as this is getting long enough as it is – check your router/firewall documentation for more information on those), or stop downloading series 78 of Lost when you want to play online.

Packet loss and high ping rates can also be caused by a poor Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) on your connection – that’s something that you have no control over and can only be diagnosed by a competent ISP technical support dude. Diagnosis is not the same as a resolution however, poor SNR issues on an upstream can take weeks, if not months to be resolved – and it doesn’t matter how much you yell down the phone at technical support it’ll only get fixed when it gets fixed. If you are disgruntled by shitty SNR then put pen to paper and put in a proper written complaint.

The last thing that can affect your connection is people cheating. It happens – I can’t say that it has happened to me during my online play, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. It’s not something you can do anything about and I’d be careful about accusing someone of lag switching or cheating as it’s difficult to prove.

Having a good ping and being host can seriously benefit your game, if you want to know how well your connection measures up to the rest of the intertubes then I suggest you check it at Pintest.net – it’s a really good test, it’s a pretty site and most importantly – IT’S FREE!

If I’ve missed something out, or got something hideously wrong then make sure you comment to let me know. There’s enough misinformation out there without me adding to it.

Headphones…?

February 18, 2010

I had a couple of posts I was going to make tonight, but I’m going to have an early night (almost 1am here).

I’ll be posting an updated YouTube vid peeps list at the very least tomorrow. But for now questions:

Do you use headphones when you play?
Are they stereo or surround?
Are they available for the PS3?

I’m currently using a pair of Sony headphones. They’re great, the sound quality is awesome, but as they are only stereo it can make pinpointing approaching difficult with lots of swinging direction back and forth.

There don’t seem to be that many headphones available for the PS3 with the majority of main brands being aimed at the Xbox360 (damn you Bill Gates!).

Hauppage HD PVR

February 17, 2010

Since my foray into making my own gameplay footage I’ve been looking for a way to make it a reality. Currently the most straightforward and cost effective way is the Hauppage HD PVR device. This uses the component connection as a pass through device as the HDMI has encryption built in to prevent people from ripping their Blu-Ray discs. It is possible to record directly from the HDMI on the PS3, but I don’t have a spare couple of thousand pounds – although I will continue to do the lottery….

Anyway, the point of this post is to give Hauppage a high five for their pricing policy. For many manufacturers it will cost you more to buy direct from them compared to going to your usual outlet, it is usually the post & packing or shipping charges that bump the prices up.

At the time of writing, the Hauppage HD PVR retails for an average of £170 (£169.99 at play.com) although Play.com shows the RRP as £179.99. So we’ll take the base consumer price as £170 for clarity.

While looking for options of getting the Hauppage HD PVR cheaper, they’re not even available on Ebay, I chanced across a forum post that mentioned getting one direct from Hauppage.com. I’d already looked at American suppliers, but none were any cheaper than buying from this country. But on Hauppage.com you can buy it direct for $199 + $21 for 4 day international shipping.

So, $199 + $21 = $220 (I paid attention at school!). At the current exchange rate that comes out at £140 plus some pennies. That’s £30 cheaper – a fair old whack in my book (or a saving of roughly 18%). That’s a lot less pennies you have to put in the jar. I’m thinking of putting some money away to save up for one of these, but we’ll see how that goes as there are more pressing priorities for the household income, especially as we’ve just come through one of the coldest winters in a long time. Mega gas and leccy bill on its way….

Anyway, if you’re looking for a HD PVR, under the current circumstances I’d say buy it direct.

****EDIT – I take back Hauppage’s high five due to an oversight on my part which is discussed here ****

My First and Last MW2 YouTube Video

February 15, 2010

I’ve been messing with the idea of recording some of my Modern Warfare 2 gameplay because I’m so awesome at the game I thought it would make a change for people to see an ordinary average player rather than the usual beasted ownage that you see from players like Hutch, SeaNanners, czeko92, theMOODIEswede, tjeb and all the other brilliant players out there.

Anyway, I’d looked at different ways of doing it and as I already had a Dazzle adapter thingy for a video camera I cobbled together a splitter cable. Which was fine except it meant playing in non-HD, and the computer didn’t like the set up. So I went cross-eyed and the PC had a fit.

The next thing was using the video camera to record directly from the screen – a cam, as it were. Again this was fine except for a couple of things:

  • flicker from the screen, it’s a 50hz plasma screen and the slowest shutter speed on the camera is 1/50th so that was unavoidable.
  • Because I was using headphones to play and couldn’t be bothered to make an audio splitter cable there was no actual in game sound
  • Connected directly to the PC I could only get 5 minutes footage before the camera shuts down
  • Couldn’t get the whole screen in without getting a massive border

I made a quick intro bit and stuck some music on it. I avoided the usual Drowning Pool or LaRoux that seems to be popular at the moment and went for something more fitting to my gameplay. It was the first (and only game) I played last night and when I joined the team were already losing. It was on Afghan and I chose my sniper class as I prefer to go sniping on this map. My secondary was the PP2000 which I’ve only just started using and by golly it’s a beast of a gun.

One mistake I made was forgetting that I had claymores equipped which meant that the twice a grenade would have been infinitely more useful I stood in the open and brazenly planted a claymore (although later on it did alert me to the position of the enemy).

And here it is (although not available in Germany due to WMG restrictions):
*UPDATE 08-05-2010- Now not available anywhere due to a copyright strike on my channel)*

I’m not going to make anymore videos for the forseeable future, not because it was difficult, but because I’m not happy with the end quality from the camera set up. But if anyone has an HD PVR that they don’t want I’ll take it off their hands for zero monies (you don’t ask you don’t get).

Mute All on MW2 – or: I’m a dumbass

February 10, 2010

Just a quicky.

In previous posts I’ve been posting about my annoyance regarding other users and their (ab)use of the mic. Well, I’ve recently discovered the proper cure (connecting a headset was my previous method). All I had to do was go to Options and put the Voice or Game Voice volume allllll the way down and Voila….problem solved.

How to use your mic when gaming

January 30, 2010

When I started gaming I occasionally used a voice program called Roger Wilco during games with friends from MOHAA.com (a site that in it’s day was very popular but is pretty much dead now). It was useful for working as a team. Now, many moons later, in game communication is de riguer – aided and abetted by broadband technologies.

Unfortunately there is always a downside to technology – mainly when it is used by people who don’t know, or don’t care how to use it properly.

Here’s what in-game comms are for:
1 – communicating with your team. Letting others know where the enemy are and what you are doing about it.
2 – in free-for-all games pissing off your opponents so that they make stupid mistakes which allow you to rack up the kills.
3 – see #1

That’s it. Well, it should be – as long as you set your mic up properly. Check your settings people – an incoherent load of static or overdriven screech does not make for good communication. If you check your mic level and it goes in the red, it’s no good. If your levels register everytime there is a sound in the game, it’s no good – everyone already has the in game sound, they don’t need to hear a bad quality slightly delayed version.

So here’s what most people use their mics for:

1 – so that everyone can hear them singing along to their shitty selection of crap pop tracks
2 – so that everyone can hear them abuse/be abused by others in their household
3 – so they can whinge about everything that happens to people who don’t care
4 – so they can commentate every move they make in game (which means you can’t actually hear anything important that’s happening – like enemy footsteps/gunfire/claymore planting etc).
5 – they just put it on because it’s there and all you can hear is breathing (creepy).
6 – static. I don’t know either……

Because over 90% of people I encounter online tend to fit one, some or all of above I had to take action. I don’t like to talk – I don’t like people much (yes, that probably includes you – but at least I’m honest) and so in general I wouldn’t use a mic. Unfortunately, the only way to banish the noise makers in Modern Warfare 2 is to add a mic so that all their bullshit goes to that instead of blasting out of my speakers in a tinny mess of screaming static.

Yes, I know I could use the mute option. But it gets tedious having to mute everyone that joins the game or lobby when the turn over of players is so high – I was spending more time muting than I was shooting the enemy in the face – and I don’t play the game to mute people.

So here’s the crux – if you see me online, you’ll see the mic/speaker icon next to my name. You can try talking to me, but you won’t get a response. I’m not ignoring you, it’s just that my headset is eight foot away.
