Rush go BOOM

August 2, 2010

DCRU Colin, Cardsnumber7, OogBilly, Me. Other than posting BFBC2 vids to YouTube we also have something else in common – we’re fed up with C4 on Mcoms, or Mines on Mcoms, or Engineer/Assault combos firing rockets at the Mcom from across the map.

There are probably others who’re fed up with it too, but it seems that over the past week a great schism has formed on the Battlefield. On the one side you have the score whore douchebags who don’t give a toss about actually playing the game, and on the other the players who just want to have a decent game.

That’s the problem with console gaming – you can’t set up your own game with specific rules. Come on, this is the 21st Century – surely we can get our own private lobbies with our own rules (or the rules of the game, as the case may be). Even if the results didn’t count towards your global score (like in Onslaught) to prevent the other pantheon of douchebaggery – Boosting.

OogBilly – *NSFW*

Me

Oh, and before anyone comes out with the “It’s easy to defend against C4…” nuggets of wisdom, allow me to declare bullshit straight away. If it was easy to defend against then there wouldn’t be so many people who are fed up with it. And the ability to defend against it has NOTHING to do with the skill level of the defenders – it takes ONE ticket to destroy an MCom out of 75. So for each base only 2:75 need to get to the base. I’d also like to throw it out there that I reckon the worst C4 abusers (and defenders of the tactic) probably don’t bother to play in defense games anyway, instead backing out to rejoin as attackers to score the oodles of points they so desperately crave.

(KontrolFreek) FPSFreek REVIEW

July 7, 2010

Let’s be clear from the outset that this review is based on my experience of using KontrolFreek FPSFreek nubbins. I’m not under any obligation to say nice things about KontrolFreek or their products, I’m not paid or endorsed by them. As I maintained when I first started this blog if I ever link to something that financially benefits me then I’ll make it very clear that it is a commercial link.

The guys at KontrolFreek did send me FPSFreeks and SpeedFreeks to check out though. This was after I posted about my own cheap version that I made to test the concept. (That post can be found here). Thank you Trevor and co. @ Kontrol Freek!

So here’s my take on the FPSFreeks.

Looks and Build

There are currently three different colour schemes. There’s the original Classic white and grey ensemble (ideal for Xbox360), Viper Black which are… black (groovy for the PS3) and Viper Ultra which I believe are black and gunmetal. The colour schemes are probably subject to change so those options are available at the time of writing (07-07-2010).

The build quality is good – tough plastic. The rubberised nubbin on the top is similar to that of the Xbox360 controller: concave and dimpled. This apparently can be alien for PS3 users…. but I think that’s splitting hairs. If concave vs convex nubbins is such a big deal for someone then I think that they belong in the “never satisfied” category. I’m sure that unless the shape of the nubbin was something ludicrous like a tiny replica of the Taj Mahal most normal people will be able to get used to them.

In terms of the design and quality of construction they are good, and definitely fit for purpose.

Fitting and Fit

Fitting and the actual fit is something that a number of people have commented on on the KontrolFreek forums. I use a PS3 and this is my experience of the fitting: the right nubbin went on no problem, but the left was a little more problematic. It was difficult to get on and when it did, it was at a funny angle so I had to re-fit it. Apparently if you use “rubbing alcohol” (whatever that is – in the UK we prefer the runny drinky type) they go on easier. But, like everything else that requires “assembly” your mileage may vary. I totally accept that the issue I had could be down to the fact that my controller is….. two years old and broken in in all the right places. So fitting is no biggie.

But the fit on the PS3 is slightly different kettle o’ kippers. The Kontrol Freeks, from what I can gather, were designed on the Xbox controller. For anyone who is not aware, the PS3 controller is a different shape to that of the Xbox. The issue is the casing area around the analogue sticks on the PS3 controller. When the stick is pushed to the extreme the crenellations that hold Freek to stick touch the casing. It doesn’t limit the movement, but if you are playing a game that requires the sticks to move around in a circular motion you can feel it bump-bump-bumping around as you rotate the stick. Again, this is another issue that is mentions on the KF forums and the solution is some DIY to shave off a millimetre or so off the crenellations. This issue is not present in Xbox users.

Usage

This is probably the most important and most discussed topic in regard to Kontrol Freek FPS. Do they work? That all depends on what you take to mean by “work”. I’m pragmatic and analytical in my approach to performance and the interpretation of statistics. Just to play Devil’s Advocate for a moment I am going to use the ultimate benchmark statistic for skill and ability in FPS gaming: KDR. A good KDR (Kill/Death Ratio) obviously proves how skilled you area at a game. By looking at my KDR stat history it would appear that since I started using the Kontrol Freek FPS my stats have taken a nose dive.

Fortunately for KF I don’t give a toss about my KDR – sure it would be nice if it went positive at some point, but as I mainly play objective game types my goal is the objective and not whoring my KDR by hiding in a bush for an entire game. So I don’t consider KDR to be a legitimate measure of…. anything really. Instead I measure on how well they work in the area which they are supposed to aid you.

The clue here is in the name: ‘K(c)ontrol’! The toughest thing for anyone playing FPS games on a console is control, or learning it. And if you’ve come from PC gaming…. well, changing from keyboard and mouse to controller is like learning to type with your feet.

The FPSFreeks give back some of that control. When I did my CheapFreaks experiment I explained how the concept worked and the increased lever increases your control over aiming. So YES, FPSFreeks do work.

Problems?

No. I mentioned the crenellation collision on the PS3 controller, but that’s minor and not really a problem. I have removed the Freek from the left stick however as it wasn’t necessary for me. I’m not the only person to do that – Oplim77 (DCRU Colin) mentioned FPSFreeks in one of his recent videos and that he only uses the right stick now. This is more likely to happen with BFBC2 players as the nubbin gets in the way of pressing the Select or Back button when attempting to spot in game. That’s not a problem that Kontrol Freek can do anything about but is mentioned for information.

Getting Used to Them?

When they are initially used the Freeks can feel odd. Both Sony and Microsoft have put a lot of time and money in to the design of their controllers to ensure that they are as universally ergonomic as possible, so adding an extra half an inch of plastic on top is going to be unusual. For me, the first couple of games were difficult as I adjusted to the new additions, but after about two hours of play (over two days) they became accepted by my thumbs. If you don’t have them and are thinking of buying some then I’ll tell you straight – when you first put them on you’ll probably say to yourself “What the hell! This is too weird, I’ll never get used to this….” – if you do then stick with it. Give it a couple of days and it’ll be great.

Should You Buy Them?

Of all the peripherals and add-ons that you can buy these are probably the best option for performance/cash results. Next to a decent headset, in my opinion, these give the best legal in-game advantage you can have. Should you buy them? Well, that’s a decision that you have to make yourself. I’ve given you my experience and opinion of them, the decision…… is yours.

Here’s a link to their site: KontrolFreek.com

And just to reiterate: this review is completely unbiased. You should all know by now that if I don’t like something then I say so. I’m still using the FPSFreek and I don’t intend on removing it (singular – right stick).

***Update***
Pricing – I was going to avoid the topic of pricing as it’s subject to change and cost is a personal and subject issue. But Donncha mentioned how much it would cost to get them over here. Well I did a quick check and direct from KF they work out at: £9.58/€11.48 (at exchange rates current at time of writing) including shipping:

Currently I think the only people selling them in the UK is Lime (who I consider to be pricey anyway) and they’re charging £11.58/€13.87 including delivery within the UK (don’t know if they send to Eire or elsewhere)

In this case it would seem it is actually cheaper to buy them direct from the US (delivery probably takes about a week though depending on how much of a delay in customs there is). And Lime! Are you reading this Lime? Stop changing the $ into a £ – I consider that tactic very insulting.

Battlefield 1943

July 4, 2010

If this was a review, it would be a year out of date. Which is fine if in July 2009 you either stumbled across a tear in the fabric of space and time which catapulted you forward one year, or, due to an unfortunate intersection of events and circumstances you lapsed in to a coma. If either of those events describes you RIGHT NOW then firstly, welcome to my blog, and secondly…. Germany beat England in the World Cup ending their dreams of a re-run of 1966.

Otherwise – here’s the diddley-oh: Battlefield Bad Company 2 has been destroying my soul. Well, not the game, that would be silly, and would probably require a different ESRB classification if that actually did happen. But if you’ve been following this blog over the past week or so you’ll know that certain aspects of the game and gameplay have been really dinking my dangler.

I’d previously played the demo of BF1943 and thought it was acceptable. It’s definitely not the best game ever made, but for a tenner it provides two things – 1: it’s not BFBC2 and 2: getting it allows me to get veteran status on BFBC2 so the next time I play that I can use the M1 Garand.

But the game itself: it’s pretty cool. It’s FPS Lite. But you’ve vehicles and shooting people in the face so it’s pretty cool. The graphics are like something from the Wii and there are no voice comms which kind of makes being able to squad up with your friends a bit pointless. There’s not really any team work. You capture flags to win before your tickets run out like in Conquest on BFBC2 (without the spawn killing) – the easiest way I’ve found to do that is to avoid your team and go for the flag that has the least activity around it.

The only niggles are that it can be a bit lagtastic at times, and sometimes when you choose to spawn at one of your flags you spawn in the middle of a load of enemy/bomb strike/tank attack. For a fun diversion from the more ‘serious’ BFBC2 it is excellent.

Pay to Play Call of Duty? GTFO!

June 28, 2010

If you’ve got nine minutes and eight seconds to spare, watch this video:

If you haven’t the time, allow me to run down the important bits.

- some Head Douche at Infinity Ward Activision thinks that Call of Duty fans are just itching to get hold of a paid subscriber based Call of Duty title……. Oookay, I’m not sure which fans he’s spoken to. But it’s usually not a good idea to believe the people in the boardroom who are paid to nod in agreement at everything you say: “Right guys, what do you think of this… what about if we charged a monthly subscription for Call of Duty?”
“Wow boss, that’s the best idea I’ve ever heard!”

I know most of you regular readers here are also Call of Duty players of various longevity, so how about you tell me how good an idea it is:

- Microsoft Post-Natal (Knect) and Sony Move are a feeble attempt at snaffling some of Nintendo’s glory and basically suck to everyone but the most casual of gamers.

- Playstation+ is a pointless waste of money. Although the idea that it’ll die is probably incorrect. It’s more likely the first step to charging for the service completely in the same way as XBL. I reckon once they hit about 30% uptake the subscriber only switch will be announced.

I must start wearing my tinfoil hat more often. It’s as if Thingy-ma-bob in the video has been looking directly inside my head. Damn you alpha waves *shakes fist in general direction of the intertubes*.

DLC… again?!

June 24, 2010

I’m starting to sound like a broken record.

I am going to be revisiting some ‘issues’ that I’ve gone over previously due to the release of the BRAND NEW *ahem* Onslaught DLC for Battlefield Bad Company 2.

I haven’t turned the PS3 on since it came out so I don’t know how much it is, a couple of quid maybe, but to me: it’s too much. I’m not buying it. Simple as that. As far as I’m concerned it’s not worth the money, and while EA/DICE continue to leave other issues unresolved why should I give them more money to play a game mode that should have been included at retail anyway?

Pay to play co-op mode? Come on, seriously? What is the replay value of that? Those of you who have Modern Warfare 2 – how many times do you actually play the co-op missions on that (you know, the ones that were free at point of sale)?

From what Donncha was saying about the Onslaught pack it’s useful to hone your vehicle and/or sniping skills so you’re also paying for the training level that should also have been included in the original game!

You don’t get any new maps, just some different lighting/weather. Big fat hairy deal – if you play GTAIV the lighting and weather changes in that…. FOR FREE. I really don’t see the value for money. And talking of money, where does the money that people pay for the Spectat Kits and this Onslaught Pack actually go? It obviously doesn’t go to sorting out the servers.

Donncha also mentioned about an issue with lag when he was playing. StoneFaceLock is constantly complaining about lag, and even ooogbilly has now put up a vid showing lag problems:

This is the very reason why I avoided EA for over half a decade. They only respond to dollars and not feedback from the community. While people continue to give them cash for essentially nothing (and this applies to all developers/publishers – not just EA/DICE) they’ll continue to go “Ka-Ching! Would you like some fancy pants to go with that?”.

I did consider getting Onslaught because Donncha, Mike, Geoff, Gary and probably everyone else is getting it and it would’ve been fun to give it a go – but decided against it when I realised that EA/DICE have effectively offered nothing for the money. No new maps. Your scrore in Onslaught doesn’t count towards anything. The servers are still laggy (or empty if you play after midnight due to the EU/US segregation) and let’s be honest, co-op mode should have been included out of the box.

When EA/DICE actually offer something that provides value for money then I’ll get it. But currently we’re been spoonfed shit and being told it’s caviar. I’m not swallowing that.

Medal of Honor Beta – First Impressions

June 22, 2010

I’m trying very hard to focus on the positives here. It is a bit difficult, I know that it’s a beta, but there are some problems that really shouldn’t be in a beta – they should have been picked up in QA prior to any public launch (closed or not).

So I’m going to get the negative bits off my chest first otherwise I’ll just be sugar coating them.

1 – Freezing – when playing as Afghan/Local/Insurgent if you check the scrore screen during spawn the PS3 freezes, if you score 40 points with your gun the PS3 freezes. I think it may be an anti-terrorist measure, but it’s definitely annoying and worrying too. I don’t want my PS3 freezing! What happens if it freezes and the magic smoke escapes – I’m pretty sure that in the T&Cs I agreed to to play the Beta there would have been a section that says something like: “Your PS3 may explode, we accept no responsibility for such situations….” so I’m thinking that either I’m not going to play the Beta until this issue is resolved, or just not play as the locals. Which brings us nicely on to….

2 – Unbalanced Teams – it seems that the only people who actually choose to play as the locals, or let the system choose for them are the new players like me. The freezing issue means that people are opting NOT to play on the locals side, and those that do get frozen out of the game as soon as they manage to string a couple of kills together. So you end up with hugely unbalanced games. I thought it was just DICE’s awesome team balancing effort again, but on ponderation the reason is now clear (see 1 above).

3 – Arse Backward Weapons – Weapons that should be strong are weak and vice versa. Especially the tank – it’s redundant and pointless.

4 – Non-destructible environments and pointless vehicles – I don’t understand the reasoning for having indestructible environments, especially when you have tanks in the mix. Fair enough don’t have guns damaging buildings, but RPGs and tank rounds should damage them, or at least injure people hiding behind them. Do I really have to get a perfect headshot with a tank against someone hiding behind a MUD BRICK wall before they can fire a rocket at me from their impenetrable fortress of dust? Come on, it’s ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as the vehicles themselves. The tanks should really just be stationary heavy MGs or something as the maps make it that you can’t go anywhere in them anyway. The maps are too small and the battle areas are too cramped for tanks.

I think that’s the negative bits out of the way…. so on with the positives:

It looks nice.

It also rewards players who put the time in with godly powerful weapons, but that’s a bit moot if EA/DICE continue with their pay-to-boost business model.

As andresparra said to me about the game: “it combines all that the Battlefield fanboys hate about COD with all that the COD fanboys hate about the Battlefield saga”. I think that fairly sums it up in its current state.

Let’s not forget that this is still in the Beta stage so any and all of the negative aspects will probably change. It’ll be interesting to see the difference between this beta and the demo (if they bring a demo out) or the full game. Currently I don’t see this game being high on my list of games to buy. You can’t be all things to all people and this is what Medal of Honor is attempting to be.

MOH Beta

June 21, 2010

Today one of the guys from YouTube gave me a code for the Beta of Medal of Honor from EA/DICE which is awesome in itself. I’ve never played the beta of any game before so this is two firsts in one for me.

I got it all sorted out without any problem – I guess I must be lucky due to the amount of people complaining about not being able to get in to the beta, or it could be that DICE have done some tweaking. I had a quick partial game of whatever the conquest type mode was on Helmand playing as the locals. It was only a quick game to make sure it was all working okay.

When I spawned it was to the losing side – DICE at its finest – and quickly found that pretty much everything is different to both MW2 and BFBC2. The Americans(?) were attacking and they were in their tank. It shot me in the face a number of times while I tried to hit it with the 40mm grenade launcher until my daughter helpfully said during one of my numerous spawns “Why don’t you play as that guy with the thing on his back?”. I’d been choosing the assault class each time, not realising that the ‘special ops’ class had an RPG! It is a bit silly though – I would have thought that Spec-ops would be have been some sort of sneaky mode class – not a KABLAMMMO LOOK AT ME OVER HERE class. But I digress.

Over all my initial taste was fairly frustrating, but that’s down to me for the most part. I’ll be playing it later and recording it in order to give my view of the beta so far.

(POLL) Forget Pay-to-Play, How About Pay-to-Boost?

June 10, 2010

I recently trimmed down my subscriptions list on YouTube to cut out more boosters. I didn’t do it on a whim as it meant removing some guys who I genuinely like as people, but can’t swallow the weak “reasons” they give to legitimise boosting. Currently I’m thinking I shouldn’t have bothered, because after all the other DLC ‘squeeze the punter until they squeak’ bovine manure that has slowly crept in recently, the biscuit has now not only been taken, but we, the consumer are also expected to pick up the tab.

I don’t mind admitting it – my knickers are well and truly in a twist. That wouldn’t normally be a problem as tight underwear can be comforting, but they’re being worn by a really grumpy gorilla who’s mislaid his Preparation-H. So, apeshit would be a more accurate term to describe how I feel about game publishers right now, especially DICE/EA. I’ve previously touched on my historical disdain for EA and their moneygrabbing ways…. but it seems it’s catching.

Donncha posted on his blog earlier about EA/DICE not only charging for the Onslaught co-op mode (you know, the sort of gametype that has been standard on…. ohhhh pretty much every game ever made), but also from June 16th people will no longer have to play the game and gain experience to unlock the weapons and specs – they can simply pay DICE some cash and bish bash bosh: instant expert. Apparently it’s to help out those people who don’t have the time to get the unlocks…. IF THEY DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO UNLOCK STUFF, THEN THEY OBVIOUSLY DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO PLAY THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE!

On the EA blog post (via) comments there it’s currently about 98% negative. Will EA/DICE respond to the community or chase the dollar. Are they really going to legitimise boosting in return for thirty pieces of silver? Up until a couple of days ago, those people who received things they didn’t work for in game were referred to as cheating douchebag boosters, but now they are “consumers”?! Being that this is EA that we’re on about I’m guessing that the dollar will win…. but you never know, and I would love to be wrong.

But I was thinking – am I off on the deep end here? Am I just a stubborn old goat who needs to move with the times, or am I a pissed of consumer who is fed up with getting the shaft and then being made to feel like I should be grateful for something that should have been included in the first place (and that doesn’t just apply to gaming)?

So I’m putting up a couple of polls. I’d like YOUR feedback. The polls are anonymous – I only see the results, I don’t get to see who voted what, so on those more “controversial” questions rest assured you won’t get any grief. The polls should also be accessible to all visitors (but I’ll test that out…).

Be completely honest. Vote for what matches your views as closely as possible. This isn’t about following the crowd, I’d like a snapshot of how you peeps, the visitors and regulars here actually perceive the following issues. As usual I’ll be abstaining from the votes – you all know how I feel on these issues:

Thanks for your input as always.
